Appreciation Facade

English Dictionary defines Appreciation as A fair valuation or estimate of merit, worth, weight, etc.; recognition of excellence.

Appreciation is telling someone either in words or inaction that you value the role, existence, ability, or impact of that person.

Appreciation goes beyond giving rewards and accolades, it's a thing of the heart expressed in words or actions.

Trend Against Appreciation

It is uncalled for as to how we handle the issue of appreciation in our contemporary days compared to how it was done in the olden days. While Parents were doing everything possible to instill in their children the heart for appreciation in those days, it is a different story entirely of how we behave nowadays.

Children now think whatever their parents do for them is their responsibility and must be carried out. Now, any attainment of success is a thing of 'Yes, I deserve it. I put in all my efforts, so if they don't award it to me, who else will they award it to?'

This is the part we find ourselves treading and it's a path that is making it so difficult for people to encounter God. There's an adage in Yoruba which says: Ti ọmọde ba dupe ore ana, A ri òmíràn gbà (If a child is grateful for a previous kindness received, he secures another opportunity for the next one).

Appreciation Instilled

However, it's not too late to pick this path again and walk in it. This will not only make a good difference in our society and increase the intra and interpersonal relationship but, will also affect our relationship with God positively.

God said in Malachi 2:2, ESV: "If you will not listen, if you will not take it to heart to give honor to my name, says the LORD of hosts, then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings. Indeed, I have already cursed them, because you do not lay it to heart." This means, when we thank God, He blessed our water and our bread, and in turn, we flourish.

Do you think you don't have reasons to thank God or anybody around you? That you're reading this is enough reason to thank God and thank those who God has put in your life. Those that have helped you in one area or the other and those who haven't helped you at all because they made you realize you can do it without them. So, I put it to you to be grateful and show appreciation for the kindness you've received.
